Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has assured health facilities and suppliers that the authority is in a strong position to pay claims promptly.

Dr. Bampoe explained that, in the past, suppliers had to wait for up to four months before they were paid, but this is no longer the case under the current administration.

The CEO made this known in an exclusive interview with Onua News in Accra.

Dr. Bampoe added that if facilities have not been paid at the end of the month, it is either because the claims have not been submitted, or they have been submitted but the NHIA is conducting further checks.

He said that once the claims are vetted and passed to the Office of the Deputy Chief Executive, Finance and Investment, and she approves, they are forwarded to his office for payment. “We do not have a problem holding claims because of funds,” he stressed.

Dr. Bampoe said he and his executives have started a nationwide tour to assess the situation on the ground. “When we go, we actually see the benefits of the card. For pregnant women, the elderly, and children who are ill, they use the card because it takes a huge financial burden away from them,” he said.

According to him, this fulfills the President’s vision of universal health coverage — getting healthcare at the point of need without financial burden.

On the issue of challenges and alleged extortions, Dr. Bampoe stated that they work with human institutions, and there will always be challenges.

He described extortion as one of the biggest problems they are trying to fight, stressing that “it is not supposed to be so.”
