The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Frederick Festenous Faidoo, has confirmed that the trader initially reported dead following the collapse of a market shed on Monday is alive and currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Cape Coast.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Sunday, Faidoo clarified that the woman, an elderly trader, sustained severe injuries. She was first treated at the nearby Naval Base Clinic before being transferred to Cape Coast for advanced care.

“I’m told that one old lady wanted to rest, even though she was cautioned not to rest there as there was a red tape around the weak shed. She still decided to rest there, and she is the one who got injured. I have been informed that she has been transferred to a Cape Coast Hospital, and she is undergoing treatment,” Mayor Faidoo stated.

The news of the trader’s survival was also confirmed by Felicia Ansah, Secretary of the Sekondi Market Traders Association, who visited the victim’s family for verification.

“We sent one of our members to the family house for confirmation after what we heard from the grapevine. She returned with information that the woman has not died. She came with one of the children of the old lady, who told us the mother had been transferred to Interbetin Hospital in Cape Coast,” Ansah explained.

Mayor Faidoo further outlined measures being taken by the assembly to support traders affected by the collapse.

“I sent my Director later to the market and reported back that the debris has been cleared, and we plan to reconstruct a temporary shed there until we are able to rebuild the whole market,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyamekye Armah, who visited the site earlier, also welcomed the update and assured he will follow up to provide any necessary support to the trader and her family.

“What happened is that we were on the ground when we were informed by the traders that the injured had passed away. Now that I have gotten accurate information, I have to follow up on Monday at Cape Coast to see the health of the victim,” the MP said.

Both the Mayor and the MP highlighted the urgent need for a complete redevelopment of the over-century-old Sekondi Market, calling for central government intervention while exploring potential private sector support.
