President John Dramani Mahama, Convenor of the Accra Reset initiative, has warned African leaders that the continent’s dependence on external powers is not true sovereignty, but a growing trap.
Speaking at the Accra Reset Convening on Thursday, January 22, in Davos, Switzerland, President Mahama highlighted what he described as Africa’s “triple dependency.”
He said many African countries rely on others for their security decisions, depend on donors for health and education systems, and supply critical minerals to the world while capturing almost none of the value.
“This isn’t sovereignty. It is a trap. And it is getting worse,” President Mahama said.
He stressed that the only way out of this dependency is for Africa to build its own capacity to act.
“In my quiet moments, as I try to find solutions, here’s what I’ve learned: Crisis creates clarity. The clarity is this: We must build our own capacity to act,” he said.
