Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has moved to allay fears ahead of the Akwatia by-election, assuring journalists that they will be fully protected in the line of duty.

“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you.

“It is our duty to protect you. We’re assuring you that these things will not happen,” Mr. Yohuno said.

The police chief gave the reassurance during a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20.

His statement comes against the backdrop of public unease over recent incidents involving journalists, notably the assault of a GHOne TV reporter by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 17.

Mr. Yohuno emphasised the Police Service’s commitment to fostering trust and cooperation with the media, stressing that ensuring the safety of journalists is a top priority as the September 2 Akwatia by-election approaches.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia constituency, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, has debunked claims that he is a school dropout.

According to him, he has been educated to the tertiary level and is well-equipped to lead the Akwatia constituency as Member of Parliament.

He indicated that he studied Human Resource Management putting him in a better place to manage the constituency better than any other candidate.

Solomon Kwame Asumadu was addressing party faithful after a unity walk organized on August 17, 2025.

“Whoever says I am not educated and well equipped to lead Akwatia is lying. I studied human resource management and that is not studied in class four,” he told the charged crowd on Sunday August 17.
