Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to take decisive action to end xenophobic attacks in South Africa following renewed violence targeting foreign nationals.
Mr. Ablakwa’s remarks came after President Ramaphosa condemned the attacks, describing the violent protests and criminal acts against foreign nationals as inconsistent with the values of South Africans and government policy.
“Dear Fellow South African, the recent violent protests and criminal acts directed at foreign nationals in parts of our country do not represent the views of South Africa’s people nor reflect our government’s policy,” President Ramaphosa wrote on X.
Responding to the statement, Mr. Ablakwa described the President’s comments as reassuring and expressed confidence in his leadership to address the situation.
“This is reassuring, President Cyril Ramaphosa. We count on your leadership to resolve this,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.
He added that Ghana deeply values its longstanding bilateral relations with South Africa, which he said have been built on solidarity and brotherhood.
“I unrepentantly share in Kwame Nkrumah’s dream — Africa Shall UNITE,” he added.
