“TRIBALISM IS PURE NONSENSE” – Nana Aba Anamoah Condemns Signage Debate

Prominent media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has entered the growing debate over welcome signage at state facilities, describing calls to replace “Akwaaba” and “Woezor” with the Ga word “Oobakɛ” as tribalistic and detrimental to national unity.

In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Anamoah strongly criticized those advocating for the change, stating: “Tribalism is pure nonsense. Unity over barriers.”

She questioned the hypocrisy behind such narratives, pointing out that tribal differences become irrelevant when addressing basic human needs. “When hunger catches you, fufu and Kenkey don’t ask if you’re Ashanti, Ga or Ewe,” she added, emphasizing the shared Ghanaian identity that transcends ethnic boundaries.

Anamoah’s comments come in response to an ongoing social media campaign led by accounts such as The Ga Union, which argues that state facilities located on Ga land, including the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Kotoka International Airport should feature Ga language greetings rather than the Akan “Akwaaba” or Ewe “Woezor.”

The debate has divided public opinion, with some supporting greater recognition of Ga culture in the capital region, while others, like Anamoah, view the movement as promoting unnecessary ethnic division.
