“MOST NIGERIAN ACTORS ARE LAZY” – Veteran Actor Segun Arinze Blasts Colleagues

Nollywood star criticizes industry’s over-reliance on film; says lack of theater experience makes actors unprepared for live performance demands.

Veteran Nigerian actor Segun Arinze has launched a startling critique against his Nollywood colleagues, describing most Nigerian actors as “very lazy” and ill-prepared due to their lack of live theater experience.

In a candid interview with Hitz FM shared on social media on Thursday, September 11, the renowned actor argued that the convenience of film production has spoiled performers, creating a generation unable to handle the uncompromising demands of stage performance.

“What I have found out is that a lot of actors back home are very lazy. Film really has a way of spoiling people. If you are an actor, come on stage and there will be no cut. The line is on your mind, and you can’t ask for your line from others,” Arinze stated.

The actor contrasted the forgiving nature of film production, where mistakes can be corrected with multiple takes, with the high-pressure environment of theater where performers must deliver flawless performances in real-time.

Illustrating his point with a personal anecdote from his early career, Arinze recounted how missing a single line during a stage performance caused professional disaster: “When I was much younger, I was playing a role. I was really charged up to play the character, and just one line cut up five pages. It was pandemonium backstage.”

The blunt assessment from the respected veteran has sparked conversation within the African entertainment industry about acting standards and the importance of theatrical training in developing performers’ discipline and skill.
