The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that he will sponsor 47 medical students who were previously beneficiaries of the late Tamale Central MP and Minister for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The pledge was made on Tuesday, August 12, during the Third Day Funeral Rites (Adua) for Dr. Murtala in Tamale, after the students honoured his memory with tributes highlighting his unwavering commitment to education and youth welfare.
While appealing to government, charitable organisations, and well-meaning individuals to continue supporting them, the students recalled the late MP as a leader deeply invested in their future.
In his response, Haruna Iddrisu, described as a close associate and “big brother” to Dr. Murtala assured the group that he would take on the full responsibility for their academic sponsorship to ensure their studies proceed without disruption.
Dr. Murtala Muhammed tragically lost his life on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, along with seven others, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in a forest area at Sikaman, in the Adansi Akrofrom District of the Ashanti Region.
