British actor Owen Cooper has become the youngest male performer ever to win an Emmy Award, claiming the best supporting actor trophy for his role in Netflix’s critically acclaimed drama “Adolescence” at just 15 years old.

Cooper broke the 52-year record previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won in 1973. The young actor earned the award for his portrayal of a schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate in the four-part limited series that dominated Sunday night’s ceremony.

“Standing up here is just, wow, it’s just so surreal,” Cooper said in his acceptance speech. “When I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn’t expect to even be in the United States, never mind here.”

The teenager, who described himself as “just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats,” added: “I think tonight proves if you listen, and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”

“Adolescence” achieved a remarkable sweep, winning best limited series along with prizes for directing, writing, and acting awards for co-stars Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. The drama was widely praised for its exploration of smartphones and social media’s impact on teenagers.

Graham, who won for his supporting role, emotionally noted: “This kind of thing normally doesn’t happen to a kid like me… it shows you that any dream is possible.”

The ceremony ran remarkably on schedule thanks to host Nate Bargatze’s innovative approach of reducing a $100,000 charity donation for every overtime speech, though CBS ultimately announced a $250,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Other major winners included “The Pitt” for best drama series and Seth Rogen for best actor in a comedy for “The Studio.”
