GMA warns of possible service withdrawal over attacks on doctors and nurses

President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Frank Serebour, has warned that health professionals may be forced to withdraw their services if violent attacks on them continue.

His caution follows a recent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), where a viral video captured relatives of a patient verbally and physically assaulting health workers at the Emergency Unit, disrupting critical services.

In a joint statement signed by Dr. Serebour and GMA General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the Association condemned the attacks, describing them as “acts of impunity” that put both patients and staff at risk.

The GMA urged the Ghana Police Service to swiftly arrest and prosecute those involved, insisting that grievances must be addressed through proper procedures and not violence.

The Association also took issue with the Health Minister’s cordial engagement with the lead suspect after the incident, warning that such actions only embolden unruly behavior. It further called on Ridge Hospital management to investigate thoroughly, address any legitimate concerns raised, and provide medical and psychological support to affected staff while improving security measures.

Citing provisions in the Labour Act, the GMA reminded the government and the public that health workers had the right to protect themselves from unsafe conditions.

“If these senseless attacks continue, health workers would have to exercise their right to remove themselves from situations that present imminent and serious danger to our lives, safety or health,” the Association cautioned
