The government has pledged its full support to the family of late highlife maestro Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, promising a dignified state-assisted funeral for the musical icon who passed away in July.

The commitment was made by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah when the bereaved family paid a customary courtesy call to the Jubilee House on Monday to formally inform the government of the legend’s passing and discuss funeral arrangements.

In an emotional address, Mr. Debrah described Daddy Lumba’s death as not just a family loss, but a profound national tragedy, acknowledging the musician’s extraordinary impact on Ghanaian culture and identity.

“If money could save a life, we would have found a way. This is not just a loss for the family, but for the entire nation… As a government, we will support the family in this difficult time,” the Chief of Staff assured.

He revealed the personal connection President Nana Akufo-Addo had with the artist’s work, stating: “The President loved Daddy Lumba’s songs. When he sits in his car and sings along to his songs, you’d be amazed so this is a great loss to us all.”

Mr. Debrah emphasized that the state would ensure the legendary musician receives the honour he deserves, noting: “We can’t say we won’t honour him, especially considering how well he honoured Ghana with his music.”

Daddy Lumba, who died at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments last month, enjoyed a career spanning over three decades, releasing more than 30 albums and gifting the nation timeless hits like ‘Aben Wo Ha,’ ‘Theresa,’ and ‘Yentie Obiaa.’

Born on September 29, 1964, he first rose to fame in the 1980s as part of the Lumba Brothers duo with Nana Acheampong before launching a revolutionary solo career that redefined Ghanaian highlife music.

His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow musicians, and national leaders, cementing his legacy as one of Ghana’s most celebrated cultural icons.
