Gov’t has not abandoned Accra–Kumasi highway — Ato Forson

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, says the government remains committed to completing the ongoing Accra–Kumasi Highway project, even while planning to start a new expressway road that will link the two big cities.

According to him, the Roads Minister has already instructed contractors to resume work, and several have returned to the site to continue construction.

He explained that while progress on the project has slowed, it is largely due to significant variations in cost estimates, which have nearly doubled and require careful review to protect the public purse.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Friday, November 14, 2025, Dr Forson stressed that the government has not backed away from the project and intends to see it through.

“We have not abandoned the Accra-Kumasi Highway project. The roads minister has asked the contractors to continue working. The contractors who are minded have gone back to site and are working. I want to assure that the government has no intention to abandon the project,” he clarified.

“The only problem that we have is that we have seen variations or cost estimates that have doubled,” he added.

The Finance Minister explained that the government remains committed to constructing a new expressway to serve as an alternative route between the two cities, which, he said, will serve different purposes.

“The two are not the same; one is a trunk road and the other is an expressway. We have never had an express road in Ghana. What we have we showed yesterday is not just a road, but it is a way to open up the country, plant industrial hubs, and increase access to industrial enclaves. So, it is more than a road,” he emphasised.
