The Children’s Support Fund, established by President John Dramani Mahama to cater for the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has raised over GH¢2.3 million barely a week after its launch.

Senior Presidential Advisor and Coordinator of the Fund, Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, announced in a statement that contributions have so far reached GH¢2.315 million, reflecting widespread corporate and institutional support.

President Mahama unveiled the initiative during the state funeral for the eight victims of the crash, pledging that the fund would secure long-term support for the children, with a focus on education, welfare, and overall well-being.

Among the early donors, Stanbic Bank Ghana contributed GH¢500,000 as seed capital. Other contributors include Procus GH Limited, GB Foods Ghana, Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd, Sage Distribution Ltd, Quantum Oil Terminals, Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd, Newgas Cylinder Ltd, and Quantum Terminals PLC.

Dr. Sawyerr outlined that donations can be made through Stanbic Bank Ghana, Stanbic Heights Branch, via dedicated cedi and dollar accounts. She assured the public of transparency, noting that the list of donors will be published weekly.

The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed, and six others, including three crew members.

The state funeral, held on August 15, drew President Mahama, senior government officials, traditional rulers, security agencies, and grieving families. It was during this solemn ceremony that the president announced the Children’s Support Fund as a way of honouring the memory of the victims while protecting the future of their children
