TMA demolishes illegal structures near govt installations

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has commenced a demolition exercise to remove unauthorised structures located on or close to government installations in the metropolis, including offices, schools, and hospitals.

This follows an earlier moratorium placed in July 2025 by the Assembly on the issuance of new temporary development permits in the area, aimed at curbing the rapid proliferation of illegal structures across Tema.

Explaining the rationale behind the move to Citi News on Friday, October 31, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Ebi Bright, said the operation forms part of the government’s broader policy to protect state lands, installations, and designated protected areas by declaring them security zones.

According to the Assembly, the exercise will cover the entire metropolis. Some residents who spoke to Citi News expressed mixed reactions. While some applauded the Assembly’s decision, others expressed disappointment, claiming they were not given adequate notice to relocate before the demolitions began.

The President of the Tema Youth Association, Abraham Nii Adjei Tawiah, on his part, pledged the support of the youth in the metropolis for the exercise.

He indicated that the association would collaborate with the Assembly by deploying community watch teams to help ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
