Two people lost their lives in a devastating accident on the Accra-Cape Coast Highway early Tuesday morning at Third Ridge Junction in the Central Region.
According to eyewitness reports and emergency responders, the incident unfolded when a pick-up vehicle attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver, veering into the path of an oncoming heavily loaded HOWO tipper truck (registration GN-1497-22). The truck driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision but lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and crush a Toyota Corolla (registration GW-5769-16) traveling in the opposite direction toward Accra.
The two occupants of the saloon car — identified as Dr. Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at the University of Cape Coast, and his Teaching
Assistant, Peter Amoadu Asmah — were trapped in the wreckage. Fire service personnel from the Cape Coast Regional Headquarters responded quickly, extricating the driver, but both men were pronounced dead, either at the scene or shortly after at the hospital. Five other individuals sustained injuries in the crash.
The truck spilled its load of stones across the road, disrupting traffic as bystanders and officials worked at the scene. Many in the UCC community have expressed deep sorrow, noting the victims’ roles in academia and calling for stricter enforcement against reckless overtaking on Ghana’s busy highways.
