We won’t allow exploitation – Sukparu warns MultiChoice

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has said that the government remains resolute in its decision to suspend the operations of MultiChoice Ghana if the company fails to comply with directives to reduce subscription fees.

His comments reinforce an earlier warning by the sector minister, Sam George, who stated that MultiChoice would have its operations halted by September 6, 2025, should it refuse to review its pricing.

Already, the Ministry has imposed a daily fine of GH₵10,000 on the satellite television operator for failing to submit its pricing data for regulatory scrutiny. As of Wednesday, the accumulated penalties stood at about GH₵150,000.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Mr. Sukparu insisted that the government would not allow Ghanaians to be exploited.

“We cannot as a country sit and allow a single entity to be exploiting the people of Ghana. So, what is the essence of the laws we pass if we cannot apply them to entities that do not comply with them? If the minister, through the regulator, has the right to tell you to present your price build-up and you refuse, then action must be taken,” he said.

Explaining further, he noted that the appreciation of the Cedi had reduced the subscription fees paid by MultiChoice to the regulator, and this should automatically reflect in consumer pricing.

“We are not talking about the commercial aspect of the business. Based on the subscription prices at the regulator, because the Cedi has appreciated, there was a reduction in the subscription they pay to the regulator. If you are charged in dollars and you are to pay the Cedi equivalent, it means that the amount you are to pay has reduced. So, if what you used to pay is reduced for your subscription, what you are giving out, you must also reduce it. But you say no,” he lamented.

The government maintains that unless MultiChoice revises its prices to reflect the new economic conditions, its operations risk suspension.
