You failed Ghanaians by allowing Ofori-Atta to escape – Kpebu tells Kissi Agyebeng

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what he described as incompetence in handling the investigation involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, October 30, Kpebu accused the OSP of allowing Mr Ofori-Atta to leave the country despite being under investigation over the controversial revenue assurance contracts between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

“This is a case of super incompetence, almost to the extent of criminal negligence. I want him to know that he shouldn’t take us for kids; you can’t do this. That is what we paid you for. Morning, afternoon, you have to be watching, you sit down and allow the crown jewel to escape, and now you are giving us tons of press conferences to do what with that?” he said.

He argued that the OSP should have built on the investigative work done by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, rather than delaying action for nearly a year.

Meanwhile, the OSP, at a press briefing on Thursday, October 30, announced plans to press charges against several individuals implicated in the SML-GRA contracts by the end of November 2025.

Those expected to face prosecution include former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta; current and former GRA Commissioner-Generals, Dr Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah and Emmanuel Kofi Nti; as well as GRA officials Isaac Crentsil and Kwadwo Damoa. Ernest Akore, a former Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, will also be charged.

The OSP said its investigations uncovered alleged acts of corruption, abuse of office, and procurement breaches in the award and execution of the contracts.
