The University for Development Studies (UDS) has written a golden chapter in Ghana’s sporting history after clinching the 2025 FISU World University Football Championship in Dalian, China.

In a thrilling and momentous final at the 2025 World University Games held in Dalian, China, the UDS of Ghana etched their name into the annals of sporting history by defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2-1.

With this victory, UDS becomes the first African university to win the prestigious global tournament, a feat that has sent waves of pride and celebration throughout the continent.

The match lived up to its billing as a clash of champions. Paulista University, the defending champions and tournament favorites took an early lead just three minutes into the match, but the Ghanaian team remained composed and resilient, holding their ground for the rest of the half.

As the clock ticked past 90 minutes and hope seemed lost, the Ghanaians did the unthinkable, equalizing in the 93rd minute with a dramatic goal that forced the game into extra time.

With neither side able to break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes, the match appeared destined for a penalty shootout.

But just like in regular time, UDS stunned the young Brazilians once again, this time from a set piece in the final minute to seal a thrilling comeback and claim a well-deserved gold medal, bringing their fairytale campaign to a triumphant close.

It was a comeback defined by resilience, teamwork, and unshakeable belief, qualities that have characterized UDS’s tournament run.

The road to the final was far from easy. The Tamale-based university, stormed through the group stages unbeaten, overcome South Korea’s Kyungil University in the quarterfinals, and held their nerve in a tense semifinal shoot-out against Spain’s University of Granada.

Led by coach Ibrahim Tanko, UDS combined discipline, flair, and resilience throughout the tournament, embodying the spirit of Ghanaian football on the global stage

Their triumph in China caps off a golden year for the university, having already claimed gold at the Ghana Universities Games and the Africa University Games.

This unprecedented achievement is not just a win for UDS, but for African university sports at large.

It proves that with the right investment, support, and talent development, African institutions can excel on the global stage.

For UDS, this victory will remain a cherished milestone, inspiring future generations of student-athletes to dream bigger and reach higher.
