The minority members of Parliament’s Committee on Communication and Information have called on the government to provide a full account of the GH¢10,000 daily fine imposed on MultiChoice Ghana (DSTV).
In a press statement signed by Matthew Nyindam, Ranking Member of the committee, the minority expressed concerns following comments by the Minister, Sam George on JoyNews regarding the ongoing DSTV subscription impasse.
While the committee expressed disappointment over what they described as Mr. George’s backtrack on his earlier stance on DSTV price reductions, the MPs stressed the urgent need for transparency from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations.
“The minister should account for the amount collected by the government from the GH¢10,000 imposed on DSTV since its inception,” the statement said.
The fine was first applied on Friday, August 15, 2025, after DSTV failed to provide critical pricing data requested under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA). The information, including a detailed breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and comparisons with at least six other African markets, was required to facilitate discussions on lowering subscription fees for Ghanaian customers, according to the Sector Minister, Samuel Nartey George.
The minority also highlighted their diligence in committee work, noting that they had formally requested a meeting to address the DSTV issue. They emphasised that it is the committee chairman, a majority member, who is responsible for calling meetings, not individual members raising concerns.
Addressing personal remarks made by Mr. George, the minority said no apology was required, adding: “It is a trait that is too expensive for him to afford.”
The statement reaffirmed the minority’s commitment to professionalism and readiness to engage in scheduled committee meetings to ensure proper oversight and accountability
