E/R: Intercepted truckload of suspected Indian hemp tampered with, half missing

A Hyundai 5-ton truck carrying more than 100 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has arrived at the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua with nearly half of its load missing.

The vehicle, with registration number ER 760-23, was intercepted by a police patrol team on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, but when it was driven to the regional command on Wednesday, October 1, several sacks had reportedly been replaced with sawdust.

The truck was brought in by Service Driver Chief Inspector Daniel Addo on the instructions of the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah. However, Citi News sources at the headquarters confirmed that a critical assessment revealed a stark difference between the overloaded consignment intercepted and what was eventually delivered, sparking serious concern among officers.

According to reports, the Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, had earlier resisted releasing the vehicle to the regional operations commander, insisting he would personally escort it to Koforidua.

Meanwhile, two suspects arrested in connection with the case, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, were not present when the truck arrived. Sources say the pair allegedly escaped from custody after being taken to the Sekesua Police Station.

In a related development, three police officers who played a role in the interception were detained by the Asesewa District Police Commander, later handed over to the regional operations commander, and subsequently held for several hours at the KTU Police Station in Koforidua.

They were released only after the intervention of the Deputy Interior Minister. The officers have since been compelled to write official statements.

Lovin Ghana news understands there is growing unease among personnel at the Eastern Regional Command, with many officers expressing dismay over what they describe as the unjust treatment of their colleagues.

Some argue that the officers involved should be commended for their bravery in intercepting the truck rather than facing disciplinary action.
