MICHAEL CARRICK is among the caretaker options Manchester United could turn to if they give up on head coach Ruben Amorim.

Amorim retains the backing of the United hierarchy but the club are keeping an eye on Premier League coaches Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Fabian Hurzeler.

Carrick, 44, took caretaker charge of United in November and December 2021, overseeing two wins and a draw before he left ahead of Ralf Rangnick’s arrival as interim manager.

United great Carrick was sacked by Championship side Middlesbrough in the summer.

Boro are top of the second tier under Carrick’s replacement, ex-Luton Town manager Rob Edwards.

With Carrick out of work, he has featured high up on bookmakers’ chalkboards for odds on the next United manager.

Carrick is still close to the United set-up as his son, Jacey, is in the club’s academy and has captained the Under-16s.

The former England international has kept busy since his dismissal, playing for a United old boys’ team against Celtic and travelling with former team-mates Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Park Ji-sung, Nemanja Vidic and Bastian Schweinsteiger to South Korea.

Carrick also recently strayed into punditry, interviewing Tottenham coach Thomas Frank for Prime Video’s Champions League coverage.

Two years ago, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tipped Carrick to take over as permanent United manager in the future.

Solskjaer had Carrick on his coaching staff during his trophyless tenure at United between 2018 and 2021.

Carrick joined United for £18.6million from Tottenham in 2006 and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Club World Cup before he retired in 2018.

Jose Mourinho immediately added Carrick to his coaching staff after the departure of long-time assistant Rui Faria.
