Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, has assured that the government is keen on training key players of Ghana’s sports ecosystem as a way of boosting the sector ahead of major sporting events.

He noted that unqualified athletes, coaches, sports scientists, dietitians, physiotherapists, among others, continue Ghana’s inability to win medals in these events.

Mr Debrah made this call at a short ceremony where he unveiled Ghana’s baton for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Our aim is to ensure Ghanaian athletes are well-prepared to compete and to succeed on the international stage. The era of unqualified athletes and officials representing Ghana at international events is over.

He highlighted that the accomplishments of legendary athletes such as Azumah Nelson, Stanley, Joshua Owusu, Ignatius Gaisah, and others have secured Ghana a notable place in the history of the event.

The baton, designed by Albert Obidiaba, carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, promoting peace and cooperation.

He revealed that the government had planned with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and other relevant bodies in fielding the best athletes on the world stage.

Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, thanked the Chief of Staff for the continuous commitment to sports.

The delegation from the GOC, after presenting the baton to the Chief of Staff, walked through the principal street of Accra.

Some prominent personalities and institutions who received the baton were the IGP, CID Boss, Comptroller-General, Director of Prisons Service, Chief Fire Officer, AMA Head, MPs, Aburihene, Aburi Girls Senior High School, Adonten Senior High School, Chief of Dodowa, just to mention a few.
