Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, National Chairperson of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU of TUC-Ghana), has declared that the union will enter upcoming salary negotiations with government determined to secure at least a 50 percent increase in base pay for workers.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, October 9, Braimah explained that the demand reflects the economic realities faced by public sector employees, who continue to struggle under the weight of inflation and rising living costs.
“We are selling our labour, and as you know, each time things change, it means that our working conditions must change as well,” she stated.
“So we are going into these negotiations with the mindset that there will be an improvement in the base pay.”
She emphasized that the union’s position is firm, describing 50 percent as the minimum acceptable figure in the upcoming discussions with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
“I think the minimum will be 50%. So even if the government gives us 100% we will say thank you, Mr Government or Mr President and walk away,” Braimah remarked.
