To mark International Day of the Girl Child which falls on 11th October, 2025, the Ghana Education Service has announced that it will distribute 6,607,095 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across the country.

This is contained in a press release signed by its Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi.

“The Ghana Education Service (GES) joins the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “The Girl I am. the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis.”

The day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support the growth, education, and empowerment of every girl in Ghana and beyond.
As part of efforts to promote the welfare and dignity of girls, Management announces the distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions of the country, Mr Fenyi wrote in the press release dated October 11.

He explained that, “This initiative is aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring that no girl misses school during her menstrual period. This intervention is in fulfilment of the Government of Ghana’s promise to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, from basic to second cycle, on a monthly basis throughout their life in school.”

The PRO further noted that the gesture “…reflects the government’s commitment to improving menstrual hygiene, promoting gender equality in education, and safeguarding the health and confidence of adolescent girls.”

The Ghana Education Service assured “all schoolgirls of its continuous support and reiterates its dedication to building an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every learner. The Service encourages girls to stay focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them.”

The GES extended heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education for the tireless efforts in operationalising this important life-changing initiative for schoolgirls across the country.
