She’s within her mandate – Ghanamannti backs Torkonoo’s legal challenge

Former Convention People’s Party (CPP) running mate and legal practitioner, Woyoe Ghanamannti, has defended former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s decision to challenge her removal from office, describing it as a legitimate exercise of her constitutional rights.

Ghanamannti said the former Chief Justice’s legal action was well-grounded in law and consistent with the principles of Ghana’s democratic system.

“What the woman is doing falls under Article 33 and Order 55, she’s seeking judicial review of an administrative process, and that’s her right,” he explained on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight.

“She has allowed the process to go on and is now seeking a review. That is within her mandate and deepens our democratic and legal ethos.”

Ghanamannti emphasized that the case should not be politicized or interpreted as a personal attack against the presidency. Instead, he said, it was a healthy test of the country’s constitutional checks and balances.

“It’s not about President Mahama or President Akufo-Addo or even Kwame Nkrumah. It’s about the position, whoever occupies it is not a demigod,” he stated.

“When such matters arise, let’s give due respect to the Chief Justice and to the rule of law.”

He added that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when institutions and individuals hold one another accountable within the framework of the law, not through fear or political loyalty.
