I will be glad if NPP takes us to court over use of United Party – Boniface

National Chairman of United Party, Abubakar Saddique Boniface has said he will be excited to witness the New Patriotic Party (NPP) challenge their decision to adopt the name United Party in court.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, Hot Issues, monitored byLovinghananews.com,
Boniface argued that the NPP cannot claim ownership of the name, United Party simply because of its past tradition associated with the previous United Party in the late 90s.

Drawing parallel with the naming of children, Saddique Boniface asserted that while many people name their children Mohammed, one cannot assume rights and ownership of the name Mohammed simply because he adopted the name first.

“In fact, I will be happy he takes it to court so that he can tell me if as a Muslim, I give birth to my child, I can’t name my child Mohammed.

“The fact that I name my child Mohammed doesn’t mean that fellow is a prophet. Everybody names his child Mohammed but nobody claims that I name my child Mohammed first so you have no right to name that child Mohammed.

“When they were NPP did they add any name. Then, Northern People’s Party (NPP) will also claim the name NPP,” he stated.

“They (NPP) should just stay quiet in their corner and not to come and create problems for themselves,” he added.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has opposed Alan Kyerematen’s use of United Party as name for his newly formed political party.

The party is considering a legal action to stop Alan from adopting the name, United Party.

In an interview with JoyNews on Friday, October 17, 2025, Walewale MP, Tia Kabiru accused Alan of attempting to rob off NPP’s political heritage which he said is rooted in the tradition of United Party.

He argued that Alan’s decision to use the name, United Party has the potential to distort NPP’s political history and create confusion in the minds of Ghanaians.

“If there is any potential breach of any law, there is a need to bring finality and clarity to that particular matter so that everyone will be at ease. My case is that the United Party was a political party formed on October 13 1957, that party was dissolved following the passage of the law to make Ghana a one-party state.

“But there is history of the now New Patriotic Party which was formed somewhere in July 1992 was actually having its root from the United Party led by K.A Busia so one cannot understand why in October 2025, Mr. Alan Kyerematen is forming political party and using the name of a political party which the NPP tradition thrives on.

“You are basically robbing the New Patriotic Party off its heritage if we allow the name to stand and so the section 10 of the political parties Act clearly prohibits the use of a name that is likely to send confusion in the minds of people,” he explained.

Alan Kyerematen officially launched the United Party (UP) on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

At a ceremony held at the Coconut Groove Hotel in Accra on Thursday, October 16, Alan Kyerematen described the formation of the United Party as the dawn of a new era and a people’s movement to unite the nation beyond partisan divides.

“Today, we lift Ghana UP, united in purpose, driven by integrity, and committed to prosperity for all,” he declared to loud applause from supporters.

“This is not just the birth of a party but the beginning of a movement that puts Ghana first,” Alan stressed.
