Specialised Courts will soon be established to deal with the illegal mining (galamsey) menace and other environment-related crimes.
President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement at the end of a meeting with the Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dr Dominic Ayine and the Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu on October 20.
The meeting recommended that the specialised courts would hold adjudications across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the special courts will also be tasked with adjudicating cases related to financial irregularities uncovered during audits. This includes enforcing surcharges, disallowances, and prosecuting related criminal offences.
Mr. Ofosu noted that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to promote transparency, enhance accountability, and deter the misuse of public funds. It also aims to ensure the prompt recovery of monies owed to the state.
