We will resist any attempt to compromise the judiciary — Afenyo-Markin warns govt

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced deep concern over what he described as growing interference in Ghana’s judicial independence, warning that such developments threaten the very foundation of democracy.

“If judicial independence can be manipulated in this manner, we should not expect free or credible elections in future,” he declared in an address to Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, stressing that the rule of law must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.

He cautioned that the issue transcends individual cases, saying, “Mr Speaker, this matter goes beyond one individual.

“If this false and irregular process succeeds, it endangers every independent constitutional body; the Auditor General, the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education, and even the Public Services Commission could be targeted.”

Afenyo-Markin described the situation as an assault on accountability and the nation’s democratic safeguards.

“This will destroy the safeguards of accountability and erase the principle of probity from our governance,” he lamented.

Addressing the House with firm resolve, the Minority Leader reiterated the caucus’s commitment to defending judicial integrity.

“Mr Speaker, the judiciary is the last line of defense for our democracy, and any act that undermines its independence strikes at the heart of our constitutional order.

“The minority will resist any attempt to compromise the sanctity of the judiciary,” he said.

He concluded with a call to national conscience, urging all stakeholders to protect state institutions from undue influence.

“Ghana’s institutions must be protected from political manipulation, and we will not sit idly by whilst dangerous precedents are set,” Afenyo-Markin warned, emphasizing that the opposition remains steadfast in its duty to safeguard the republic’s democratic values.
