Government has laid before Parliament the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Revocation Instrument, 2025, aimed at strengthening the legal framework against illegal mining activities.
The new legislative instrument, which will mature after 21 sitting days, seeks to revoke L.I. 2501—which restricted the President’s authority to approve mining in forest reserves—and to completely repeal L.I. 2462.
According to the government, the measure forms part of renewed efforts to curb illegal mining and restore Ghana’s forest ecosystems.
Addressing journalists after laying the Instrument, the Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the revocation is intended to close loopholes in existing laws that have been exploited to permit mining in protected areas.
