Central Gonja DCE urges residents to take responsibility for clean environment

Residents engaged in clean up exercise

The District Chief Executive for Central Gonja, Mahama Fuseni, has called on residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and not wait to be instructed before acting.

According to him, cleanliness must become a habit for every citizen, as a dirty environment reflects poorly on its inhabitants.

“Cleanliness should be a habit. When your environment is bad, it speaks about you,” he said. “Let us not only clean our rooms but also our frontage and public places.”

Rubbish

Speaking during a community clean-up exercise in Buipe, the district capital, the DCE noted that sanitation continues to be a major challenge in the area due to the rapid growth of commercial activities and market operations that generate increasing volumes of waste.

“Sanitation issues in Central Gonja, especially in Buipe, are a major problem for the community,” said one resident. “Some people dump refuse anywhere instead of using the waste containers provided.

Some even send children who cannot lift the waste bins to dispose rubbish, and they end up dumping it on the ground” She added.

She described the situation as worrying and cautioned that such practices not only dirty the environment but also pose health risks to residents.

Meanwhile the District Sanitation Officer, Suleyman Ibrahim, also explained that although the sanitation situation had deteriorated in recent times, efforts are underway to improve waste management across the district.

“The situation used to be bad, but we are improving. We have begun clearing refuse heaps across the district and we are making progress,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the Assembly will soon implement a ‘pay-as-you-dump’ system to ensure proper waste disposal and prevent unauthorized dumping.

“Residents will pay before dumping waste into containers so that we do not have refuse heaps again,” he explained.

The exercise forms part of the district’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental sanitation and encourage community involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
