Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says Ghana’s strong support for Palestinian rights at the United Nations was a principled choice rooted in history, not political calculation.
He explained on TV3, as monitored by Lovinghananews. that the government weighed diplomatic risks but refused to abandon long-held values.
He stated that Ghana has always been “on the right side of history,” recalling that “we recognize the state of Palestine as far back as 1988 and we have been consistent.”
According to him, “there are principles we stand for. We stand for freedom and justice,” noting that Ghana’s stance draws from its experience with slavery and colonialism.
Responding to fears the country could face diplomatic backlash, he said there was no compromise on moral duty; “Let us not forget that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
Our national interest cannot be delinked from our national history.” Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana condemns terrorism and insisted innocent lives must never be targeted, adding “identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Don’t take it out on innocent civilians.”
