Cenpower Generation Ltd, owner of the Kpone Independent Power Plant, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and community partnership through the third edition of the KIPP Clean Project held at Sega Beach in Kpone in the Greater Accra Region.

Launched in 2024, the KIPP Clean Project is a remediation and restoration initiative by Cenpower that addresses the pressing issue of pollution along the Sega Beach shoreline.

The project reflects the company’s belief in ecocentrism and biodiversity conservation, acknowledging the need to maintain the ecological balance of the coast, which has been threatened by plastic waste.

This year’s clean-up coincided with Cenpower’s Financial Close tenth anniversary. The event brought together over 300 volunteers, including employees of Cenpower Generation Ltd, Cenpower Operations and Services Ltd, Excelior Solution Services, students from Kpone Methodist A. Basic School, representatives from the Kpone Traditional Council, members of the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, and local community members.

In attendance were the Municipal Chief Executive of the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton, and the Presiding Member, Mr George Nuertey Ahimgah, who joined participants in the exercise.

To maximize waste collection from the shoreline, Excelior Solution Services, a company specializing in waste management and coastal sanitation, supported the initiative by collecting, sorting, and safely disposing of the waste to ensure the impact extended beyond the day’s activity.

The exercise resulted in the collection of over 250 tonnes of plastic and general waste from the Sega shoreline, reflecting an increase from the over 200 tonnes gathered in 2024.

Speaking during the event, Hon Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton commended Cenpower for its sustained contribution to community development and environmental health.

He said, “We are happy to participate in this third edition of the KIPP Clean Project, especially on a day set aside as National Sanitation Day. I commend Cenpower for including students in this initiative, helping to inculcate cleanliness and environmental responsibility at a young age. We congratulate Cenpower on its tenth anniversary and thank them for their continuous support to our community through employment opportunities and impactful corporate social responsibility programmes.”

Mr Theophilus Sackey, Chief Executive Officer of Cenpower, indicated that “The third edition of the KIPP Clean Project is a symbol of continuity and purpose. Since Commercial Operations, Cenpower has powered Ghana’s growth while staying true to its responsibility to people and planet.

This project is not only about cleaning a beach. It is about building a legacy of care for our environment and engaging our community in meaningful ways.”
He added, “This anniversary is as much a celebration of our people and partners as it is of Cenpower’s achievements.

We extend sincere appreciation to our dedicated staff, whose professionalism and commitment have powered our journey, and to our partners and stakeholders for their collaboration and trust.

This milestone reminds us that sustainable progress comes through teamwork, shared purpose and accountability. Together, we will continue to power Ghana’s growth responsibly and build an even stronger legacy for the next decade.”

Representing Cenops, the operational arm of Cenpower, Mr Shmuel Brew Butler, Chief Finance Officer, noted that “Supporting this initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to operational excellence and corporate responsibility.

As the operational arm of Cenpower, our responsibility extends beyond energy provision. It includes the well-being of the communities in which we operate. Environmental sustainability is central to our mission, and this clean-up allows us to demonstrate that commitment through direct action.”

On behalf of Cenops, he congratulated Cenpower on reaching ten years of powering progress and reaffirmed continued support for the vision through daily operations and initiatives like the KIPP Clean Project.

Earlier in the week, Cenpower staff visited the Kpone Methodist Basic School to engage students on the importance of cleanliness, recycling, and protecting marine life, reinforcing the company’s dedication to community education and behaviour change for environmental sustainability.

Mr Michael Wiafe, Chief Technical Officer at Cenpower, thanked all participants for their enthusiasm and teamwork, emphasising that “Each bag of waste collected today is a step toward a cleaner environment and a healthier ecosystem.

Let us continue to make environmental care part of our daily lives, not just today but every day.”
Senior executives, including Mr Peter James, Chief Financial Officer, and Ms Elizabeth Akin Taylor, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, were also present to lend their support to this special anniversary edition of the KIPP Clean Project.
