The European Union (EU) has launched a €2.4 million project to restore 5,000 hectares of degraded forest and support 20,000 farmers and rural communities across Ghana. The initiative was unveiled at the Forest Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) in Fumesua, Ashanti Region.

Four local NGOs, Goshen Global Vision, Nature & Development Foundation, Proforest Initiative Africa, and World Vision Ghana, will implement the project, prioritizing women and youth while promoting agroforestry and sustainable livelihoods.

Activities will cover the Ahafo, Bono East, Upper East, and Western Regions.

Ms. Paulina Rozycka of the EU Delegation said the project is part of the Sustainable Forest and Cocoa Programme and complements Ghana’s “Tree for Life” efforts.

She noted that forest degradation threatens ecosystems and local economies, while recent FLEGT timber licensing reflects Ghana’s progress in forest governance.

FORIG Deputy Director Dr. Lucy Amissah and Forestry Commission representative Mrs. Valerie Fumey Nassah expressed support, highlighting the project’s role in encouraging responsible land use. The launch concluded with tree planting on the FORIG campus.
