MC Portfolio questions state’s role in Daddy Lumba’s funeral

Ghanaian MC and creative personality David Adjei Frimpong, widely known as MC Portfolio, has expressed concerns over the execution of state support during the final funeral rites of highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM, he questioned the apparent absence of state coordination in the ceremony.

“This was supposed to be a state-assisted burial, and from the look of things, I think there is an element missing. I think the hand of the state is missing in terms of their coordination,” MC Portfolio stated.

He highlighted the symbolic significance of the late musician, who he said “brought presidents and kings together,” emphasising that such contributions warrant the honours they deserve.

He noted, however, that the issue lies not with the idea of state support itself, but with the inconsistency in its execution.

The ceremony, held at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 13, drew thousands of mourners and political figures, including President John Dramani Mahama and other NDC officials.

A GH¢50,000 donation was presented to the family during the service, and the event featured deeply personal tributes from Daddy Lumba’s children, along with performances of his iconic songs.

MC Portfolio stressed that while public disappointment is understandable, the family ultimately holds authority over funeral arrangements. “The family’s decisions must be respected, even amid public disappointment,” he said.
