President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have donated GH₵50,000 to the family of the late Highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
The donation was presented during the final funeral rites held on Saturday, December 13, at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The final funeral rites of the legendary musician follow weeks of legal disputes over his burial.
Thousands of fans began arriving early at the Heroes Park of the stadium, where the body is lying in state. The atmosphere is a mix of mourning and celebration, with devotees singing and dancing to Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits in tribute to his enduring legacy.
Security has been tightened, with heavy police presence and snap checks around the stadium to maintain order and ensure the safety of mourners.
The burial follows a decisive ruling by the Accra High Court, which cleared the way after applicants in a family dispute failed to raise the GH₵2 million required to sustain an injunction blocking the release of the body. With the payment unmet, Transitions Funeral Home was directed to proceed with funeral arrangements.
The court’s decision ended months of uncertainty, allowing the family, fans, and children of the late artist to proceed with the burial. Lawyers for the respondents had argued that further delays were unfair and should not continue.
Preparations for the funeral intensified following the ruling, and today’s ceremony marks a pivotal moment in closing a chapter that had captivated national attention.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, Daddy Lumba leaves behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire generations. His burial today allows fans and family to bid farewell to a true national icon.
