Police in the Eastern South Region have arrested ten people and seized nine firearms in a series of security operations in Akwatia ahead of the by-election.
The weapons — eight pump-action guns and one locally made single-barrel gun — were recovered between August 22 and 23 through snap checks and targeted raids to curb illegal arms possession before the polls.
Among the arrests, police near St. Dominic Hospital intercepted Bernard Kumi Ofosu with a pump-action gun and cartridges.
Though he presented a licence, the weapon is under verification. At Akwatia Y-Junction, officers picked up Joshua Amenuku with cartridges, later finding another gun at his home.
Further checks at Boadua Livingstone Junction led to the arrest of Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national Lu Youyan after ammunition was traced to their employer, who is now wanted.
The same checkpoint later yielded another arrest — Pieterson Joseph, found with a pump-action gun and 46 cartridges.
That evening, police intercepted a Toyota Tundra at Staff Village, Boadua, recovering three more pump-action guns. The driver, Stephen Nkansah, claimed two were his and one belonged to his chief.
