President John Dramani Mahama says his government is determined to rebuild Ghana’s poultry industry and end the country’s heavy dependence on imported chicken within the next three years.

Speaking during a tour of the National Service Authority’s poultry farm in Haatso on Friday, September 12, 2025, he praised the facility’s scale and efficiency despite the heavy rains that marked his visit.

“What is happening here is very impressive,” he said after moving from pen to pen to inspect the birds and technology in use.

The President pledged to transform the farm into a centre of excellence that would serve as a production hub, training ground and research facility.

He revealed that he had tasked the Finance Minister to personally visit the site and identify areas for financial and policy support.

Mahama also announced plans to launch a new national poultry initiative next month, dubbed Nkoko Nkitikiti, aimed at supporting farmers at every scale, providing day-old chicks for large producers and targeted aid for smaller farmers.

“The ultimate goal is to halt the massive importation of poultry products and retain millions of dollars within the local economy.

“We want to eat home-grown Ghanaian chickens,” he declared to applause.
