The Ministry of Transportation is working to create a strong set of rules governing the use of commercial tricycles and motorbikes, or “okadas” as they are known in the nation.
According to Transport Minister Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Ministry has started the process of amending the Road Traffic Act 2004, Act 683, and the Road Traffic Regulations 2012, LI2180, in an effort to control motorbikes and tricycles for passengers who pay fares.
Motorcycles and tricycles, commonly known as Okada, are vital for transportation systems. However, current regulations ban their use, creating enforcement and safety challenges,” Mr Nikpe said when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series press conference held at the Presidency in Accra.
Stakeholder consultations were concluded, he said, and the Cabinet had approved the proposed revisions, which will be presented to Parliament upon their return.
The Minister stated that in order to alleviate the burden on commuters and take into account microeconomic advancements, such as the decrease in gas costs, the government negotiated a 15% reduction in public transportation taxes with transport operators.
He claims that since the administrative arrangement on public transportation prices was implemented in 2015, this cut, which took effect on May 24, is the largest one to date.
According to Mr Nikpe, this action has helped passengers while preserving the stability of transportation operators’ operations.
