The Ghana Medical Trust Fund continued its nationwide assessment tour of Regional and Teaching Hospitals with a visit today, Friday, September 19 to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

The delegation, led by the Fund’s Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, engaged hospital leadership as part of efforts to better understand the state of healthcare delivery and the challenges faced in combating non-communicable diseases.

The Fund’s delegation was received by Dr. Leslie Issa Adam-Zakariah, Medical Director, together with members of the hospital’s management team.

During the meeting, leadership of Ridge Hospital outlined critical challenges affecting service delivery, ranging from human resource gaps in specialist care to broader systemic issues that impact patient management and referrals.

A major concern raised was the lack of essential diagnostic equipment including; CT scanners, MRI, fluoroscopy and mammography machines. Without these tools, the hospital is compelled to refer patients to external facilities for advanced diagnostic procedures, a situation that delays timely diagnosis, disrupts continuity of care, and places an added financial and emotional strain on patients and their families.

The engagement provided a constructive platform for sharing perspectives on how the Ghana Medical Trust Fund can align its support to address these needs.

The discussions also reinforced the importance of closer collaboration between the Fund and frontline health institutions in shaping interventions that will deliver measurable impact.

In her remarks, Obuobia Darko-Opoku reaffirmed that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is committed to practical, solutions-driven support for health facilities nationwide.

She stressed that the Fund’s focus is not only on mobilizing resources, but also on training specialists, supporting medical research, improving hospital infrastructure, and bridging service delivery gaps, all with the goal of strengthening healthcare and saving lives across Ghana.
