PSG insiders are surprised by Emery’s poor form

Relegated to the role of substitute, disappointing at Marseille and not called up to the French national team, Warren Zaïre-Emery is going through a rough patch.

Having fallen behind the trio of Joao Neves, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz in recent months, the young PSG midfielder is aiming to make a bigger impact to restore his status.

For both the player and the club, it is ‘just’ the story of one match. No one stood out, and Warren Zaïre-Emery was no exception to PSG’s overall mediocrity on Monday in Marseille (0-1), on a night when Joao Neves’ absence (thigh injury) gave him a chance to show that he could be more than just a substitute. This is the role to which the midfielder has been confined since the arrival of the Neves-Vitinha-Fabian Ruiz trio in the second half of last season. In the short term, it is unlikely that his 78 minutes on the pitch at the Stade Vélodrome (3 duels won out of 9) will help to change perceptions.
His trademark is his power, his ability to change the pace: “I recover, I accelerate.” He’s regained that since the resumption. For us, he’s in a good moment, but it’s true that we thought he would be in continuity in Marseille. He also had to digest his left ankle injury, which forced him to chase his best level between March and June.
