Alan was right to reject Akufo-Addo’s ‘extremely terrible’ second term – Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has expressed support for Alan Kyerematen’s decision to have distanced himself from the second term of President Nana Akufo-Addo, describing that period as “extremely terrible” for Ghana.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 18, Cudjoe said it was wise for Kyerematen not to be seen as part and parcel of Akufo-Addo’s second term.

“It served him better not to be recognised as a part and parcel of the second reign of Akufo-Addo because that reign was terrible—extremely terrible. So people should take solace in the fact that he moved away,” Cudjoe stated.

This follows the rebranding of Kyerematen’s Movement for Change into the United Party (UP Plus) which was officially unveiled this week, marking a fresh start for Kyerematen and his supporters. The new party pays tribute to a name with historical significance in Ghanaian politics and promises to bring transformational leadership and good governance to the forefront.

At the unveiling, UP Chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface emphasized the party’s commitment to universal values, competence, and credible leadership, highlighting their aim to bring real change to Ghana’s governance.

Alan Kyerematen described the rebrand as a “new dawn” for the country’s political landscape—focused on economic transformation, job creation, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption.

He pledged that UP would mobilize the collective talents of all Ghanaians irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, aiming to offer a credible alternative to the established political duopoly.

The party’s official registration with the Electoral Commission earlier this month marks the beginning of what Kyerematen calls a new chapter in Ghanaian politics—one that seeks to deliver prosperity and sustainable development for the nation.
