Authorities have confirmed that there were no casualties following a massive fire that destroyed the China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi on Thursday.

Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang praised the swift intervention of firefighters and bystanders in evacuating all staff safely.

“We have not had any casualty. The fire department was able to evacuate all the staff. All the workers, with the help of bystanders, were able to evacuate all of them. What we have is the losses that we have,” he said.

The mayor also expressed concern about the financial losses incurred, estimated in the millions of dollars.

He pledged support for the foreign investors affected by the blaze, noting their important role in employing hundreds of local youth.

“We will try as much as possible to speak to the investors as early as feasible, calm them, and offer them the nation’s support,” he added.

The fire, which began at the back of the mall, quickly engulfed the building, destroying shops selling groceries, electronics, and household items.

Witnesses reported that the flames spread rapidly, leaving traders unable to save most of their goods.

China City Mall, which opened earlier this year, had become a popular shopping destination for residents of Kumasi. The Ghana National Fire Service is investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the full extent of the damage.
