Galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP – Kwakye Ofosu alleges

Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the previous Akufo-Addo-led government of being complicit in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Kwakye Ofosu criticized the former administration for failing to address the environmental crisis.

“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he asserted.

He referred to reports by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who had been chosen by the prior government to lead the fight against illegal mining.

“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials, party officials,” Kwakye Ofosu said.

The Minister further emphasized that galamsey was a major source of finance for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the time, which explained the administration’s lack of action.

“He has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” he added.
