Minority condemns Abronye’s arrest, warns of growing political persecution

The Minority in Parliament has condemned what it describes as a “growing culture of political persecution and abuse of power” following the arrest and remand of Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Abronye DC was remanded in police custody until Friday, 12th September 2025, after being charged with “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 9th September 2025, and signed by Jerry Ahmed Shaib, 2nd Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe, the Minority Caucus argued that the arrest signals a politically motivated attack.

“The denial of bail and his remand clearly suggest punishment, not justice,” the statement said. It added that the government is increasingly weaponising the judicial system against perceived opponents, warning that such tactics “fall far short of international standards of legal specificity.”

The caucus noted that Abronye DC’s arrest followed his attempts to seek political asylum in eight countries, citing threats to his life and political persecution.

Beyond this case, the Minority highlighted a wider pattern of intimidation in the country. “Journalists, social commentators, and opposition figures [are] harassed through arbitrary arrests and detentions,” while “state security [is] deployed to intimidate citizens who expose corruption or question government narratives.”

The statement also raised concerns over threats against key opposition leaders, including Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and National Organiser Mr. Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B). It called for urgent investigations into these “assassination plots,” which the caucus claims are “issued openly by NDC executives and their associates while the authorities look away.”

“The Ghana Police Service must rise above partisanship, abandon its current posture as a tool of the ruling party, and guarantee protection for all political actors, regardless of affiliation,” the statement urged.

The Minority also criticised the government’s handling of the humanitarian crisis in northern Ghana, where communal violence has reportedly left dozens dead and tens of thousands displaced.

“This government has abandoned its constitutional obligations, choosing instead the path of authoritarian consolidation… Ghana’s democracy is too precious to be surrendered to fear, intimidation, and authoritarian excess,” Jerry Ahmed Shaib concluded.
