Bekwai Subrisu, Western Region – December 9, 2025

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) Taskforce has arrested two Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining activities that have severely polluted sections of the Subri River at Bekwai Subrisu in the Western Region.

The arrests were made on Monday, December 8, 2025, at about 10:30 a.m., when NAIMOS troops carried out targeted raids on illegal mining sites at Subrisu.

The suspects were caught in the act of mining along the Subri River using two excavators and other mining equipment.

According to NAIMOS, the activities of the suspects and their associates have caused significant environmental damage, including extensive pollution of the Subri River and nearby water bodies, as well as widespread land degradation in the area.

During the operation, taskforce personnel dismantled several metallic gold-trapping platforms used by the illegal miners.

Three heavy-duty water pumping machines were also destroyed to disable ongoing and future illegal mining activities.

The two suspects have since been transported to Accra and handed over safely to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations and appropriate action in line with Ghana’s laws.

NAIMOS has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying its nationwide crackdown on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, as part of efforts to protect water bodies, preserve the environment, and restore order in the country’s mining sector.
