The Government has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) following salary deductions from President John Dramani Mahama and his political appointees.
The development was disclosed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a social media post on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
According to him, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department had formally informed government that the deductions had been completed and the funds transferred into the account of the initiative.
“The Controller and Accountant-General has formally notified Government that he has deducted and transferred a total of GH¢6.1 million to the Fund pursuant to the President’s directive,” he stated.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the deductions were carried out in fulfilment of commitments made by President Mahama during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund last year.
“At the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to the Fund,” he noted.
He further disclosed that the President had encouraged all political appointees to contribute one month of their salaries towards the initiative to support healthcare financing for vulnerable persons.
Additionally, appointees who failed to comply with the President’s asset declaration deadline were directed to forfeit three months of their salaries to the Fund as part of accountability measures.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu indicated that arrangements are currently underway to transfer the remaining tranche, including deductions from officials affected by the asset declaration sanctions.
The Mahama Cares initiative was established to strengthen healthcare financing and improve access to medical treatment for vulnerable individuals across the country.
