The Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Osman Masawudu, has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, that he is not above the law after he (Masawudu) was reportedly assaulted by one of Azorka’s escorts.
The incident occurred during a scuffle at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area when tensions flared between the two political camps. Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated, leading to Alhaji Masawudu being slapped by one of Mr. Azorka’s escorts.
Recounting the incident, Alhaji Masawudu said he was granting an interview when the NDC vice chair approached and verbally attacked him in the presence of police officers.
“This unfortunate incident occurred in the presence of the police, and I want to send this caution to Azorka: he is not above the law. He made a very devastating comment, clearly saying that today he will make sure I am killed together with Afenyo-Markin, and that there will be another by-election in Winneba,” Masawudu alleged.
He added that he initially dismissed the confrontation as a joke due to their shared northern background, but later realised the situation was serious.
“When he was approaching me, I thought as a political person, and because we both come from the north, I was telling him he is my brother, and he needed to stop. In my head, it was a joke. If I knew what he was doing was serious, I would have shown him my bad side. I will let him know that I am Masawudu, and I am not afraid of this,” he said.
Police presence in the area has since been reinforced to maintain calm as voting continues in the constituency.
